Julian Alvarez has played against some incredible defenders during his career.

As a Champions League and World Cup winner, it's fair to say that Alvarez has played against the best of the best.

Speaking to ESPN on TikTok, Alvarez was asked to name the three best defenders he's ever faced.

Of course, there was the obligatory mention for Virgil van Djik as the Liverpool star is widely seen as the best defender in the world.

Interestingly though, Alvarez also named Tottenham'sCristian Romero as one of his most difficult opponents, claiming that his aggressive style of defending is incredibly tough to play against.

Cristian Romero is one of the best defenders

Alvarez spoke about the £41m Tottenham star and how difficult he is to face.

"Julian name the three best players you've played and why?” Alvarez was asked.

"Van Dijk, because he's very strong, he's one of the best defenders in the world. Cuti Romero and Licha Marrinez. Cuti because he's very aggressive and one of the best centre-backs in the world now, and Licha too, both of them are very similar in their aggressive defending," Alvarez said.

Julian Alvarez's record vs Cristian Romero

It may not be that surprising to hear Alvarez say this about Romero. After all, Manchester City's record against Tottenham in recent years hasn't been that strong, and that's where these two have met.

However, when Alvarez comes up against Romero, there's usually only one winner, despite City's perceived poor record vs Spurs.

Julian Alvarez does in fact have a 75% win ratio against Romero during his career, and he's even scored a goal against him in a 4-2 win back in the 2022/23 season.

Alvarez hasn't actually struggled against Romero all that much during his career, so it's something of a surprise to hear the striker name the Spurs man as one of his toughest opponents.

Jamie Carragher has been very critical of Romero this season, and he'll be hoping his form improves in the coming weeks.
