Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has been labelled 'arrogant' and 'absolutely rank' after laughing off suggestions Eddie Howe deserved a statue in his honour following Newcastle United's Carabao Cup success.

Newcastle ended their 56-year wait for a major piece of silverware after beating Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.

Goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak sent the Magpies on their way, sparking unforgettable celebrations in Wembley and back on Tyneside.

Newcastle lost on their last visit to Wembley, beaten by Manchester United in the same final two years ago.

Since their 1955 FA Cup success over Manchester City, the club have lost five major finals and twice finished as Premier League runners up with their trophy drought one of the longest in world football.

Sunday's victory ended that barren run with calls for a statue of Newcastle manager Eddie Howe to be erected outside St James' Park to further celebrate the triumph.

Appearing on The Overlap Fan Debate, Lee Lawler of Newcastle Fans TV posed the question to Scholes and Jamie Carragher, seemingly about to suggest Howe deserves a statue one day in the future.

But Scholes immediately cut off Lawler, laughing at the suggestion before quipping: 'He won the League Cup, f*****g hell!

'Everyone tried to get knocked out of that all year.'

Scholes' reaction did not go down well with Newcastle supporters who were left outraged by the former midfielder's 'classless' comments.

'That response from Scholes is absolutely rank. Arrogant, out of touch & completely classless,’ NUFCBlog wrote.

‘Ending that 70 year wait was always going to = an outpour of emotion after decades of disappointment through generations of fans.

‘If Newcastle can’t celebrate that, what is the point?’

Manchester United won the same competition two years ago – one of only five trophies the club has won since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down as manager 12 years ago.

‘The arrogance those connected with Man Utd still display is exactly why everyone else is enjoying the downfall,’ @avfc_stef wrote.

Fans from clubs across the Premier League looked to be siding with Newcastle, with AFCMinded commenting: 'Massive sign of football snobbery.

'Success at different clubs are not the same. First trophy in 6 decades, he definitely deserves a statue. Otherwise it means only managers that win titles deserve statues and are doing a great job, that’s not true.'
