On August 27th, Liverpool confirmed that an agreement has been reached with Valencia for goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili to arrive at Anfield next summer.

The 24-year-old Georgia international wasn’t the only stopper on Liverpool’s radar. That’s at least what L’Equipe are reporting.

The French newspaper have published a detailed interview with Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes.

They point out to the 33-year-old that he was wanted by top clubs in the summer window, to become their second-choice goalkeeper. However, the former Portugal international wasn’t in favour of such a move.

According to L’Equipe, Liverpool made an approach for Lopes at the start of the last window.

“Yes, it’s true that I had opportunities very early in the transfer window. Especially one, in a very big European team. Honestly, it wasn’t my goal at that time to be No. 2,” he said.

“But if it had happened at the end of the transfer window, maybe my choice would have been different.”

Lopes was first-choice goalkeeper at the Ligue 1 side last season, where he kept 10 clean sheets and conceded 50 goals from 33 matches across all competitions.

His status at the club has changed as L’Equipe say he’s the fourth-choice under manager Pierre Sage. Lopes will now be regretting his choice to not consider a move to Liverpool.

Alisson Becker has been No.1 at the Premier League side since he joined. Caoimhín Kelleher is the Brazilian’s backup and Vitezslav Jaros is the third goalkeeper in Arne Slot’s squad.
