Manchester United have historically kept a close eye on talents at Sporting CP.

The Red Devils famously signed Cristiano Ronaldo from the Portuguese giants back in 2003 in an £12m deal – a move many regard to be one of the best transfers of all time.

Furthermore, Manchester United have also taken the likes of Nani and Bruno Fernandes from Sporting CP – with both sides sharing a strong relationship.

The latter has since become captain under Erik ten Hag – but is currently leading his colleagues nowhere special as Manchester United sit 12th in the Premier League.

Now, another top talent at Sporting CP could swap Lisbon for Manchester in Geovany Quenda.

Manchester United make contact to sign Geovany Quenda

A story from A Bola in Portugal now claims that Manchester United have been in touch with Sporting CP to ask what it would take to sign the 17-year-old wonderkid.

Quenda has already been called up to the Portugal side by Roberto Martinez – where he met Ronaldo – having made a strong impression under Ruben Amorim at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

A Bola believe Sporting CP recognise the teenager’s immense ability, and have therefore protected him with a €100m (£83m) release clause.

The Portuguese news outlet state that Sporting CP took the decision to increase Quenda’s €45m (£37.4m) release clause up to £83m when agreeing a new contract with the winger in September – in expectation of Premier League clubs making approaches.

INEOS could sign the new Cristiano Ronaldo for Erik ten Hag, but a sale is needed first

Despite comparisons to Ronaldo – as both rose through the youth ranks at Sporting CP while dazzling on the flanks – Manchester United would be unwise to sign Quenda before offloading Antony.

The Sporting CP No.57 is a similar profile to the Brazilian and also Amad Diallo, in the way that he tends to cut inside from the right flank onto his stronger left foot.

Signing Quenda now would mean the teenager finds himself in a crowded field for game time at Old Trafford, although INEOS are making plans to free up some space in Ten Hag’s attack.

TBR Football understand Manchester United have told Antony he can leave in January, so if the South American does find a new club, perhaps the door will open for Quenda.
