Newcastle United are still in the market for a new centre back and Eddie Howe could now launch a raid on Chelsea before the transfer deadline.

The Magpies saw Fabian Schar pick up a red card against Southampton on Saturday, which is the last thing Eddie Howe needed.

Newcastle are already without centre backs Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman to long-term injuries.

Schar will now serve a suspension and Newcastle are lacking options at centre back.

Newcastle have targeted Marc Guehi but have yet to find an agreement with Crystal Palace, sparking interest in other defenders.

Newcastle United consider Chelsea raid

The Athletic claim that Newcastle have now started dialogue with Bayer Leverkusen over a move for Burkina Faso defender Edmond Tapsoba.

Newcastle are looking closer to home as well though and have 'expressed an interest' in signing Chelsea defender Axel Disasi.

Disasi was not involved in Sunday's 2-0 defeat to Manchester City having missed all of pre-season.

The French centre back has been recovering from a hernia operation but he is hoping to be back soon.

"I am back on the pitch, not fully, but I'm close," Disasi told Chelsea's official website earlier in August. "I am feeling good. There is some strength that I lost from my injury that I have to get back, but I hope I will be fit very soon."

Some Newcastle fans will recall interest in Disasi before he joined Chelsea.

Reports last summer suggested that Newcastle agreed personal terms to sign Disasi from Monaco but never actually finalised the deal.

Disasi was understood to be disappointed with that move breaking down before eventually joining Chelsea.

Newcastle are now back in for Disasi, viewing him as a potential alternative to Guehi ahead of the transfer deadline.

Axel Disasi's time at Chelsea

Disasi impressed in France with Reims and Monaco before joining the Chelsea revolution in 2023.

A regular under Mauricio Pochettino last season, Disasi started 29 Premier League games and came off the bench twice.

The 6ft 3in defender has been hailed as a 'warrior' by Ibrahima Konate, the Liverpool star and fellow French centre back.

Disasi turned in a particularly impressive display against Manchester City back in February.

Jamie Carragher hailed a superb Disasi performance on Sky Sports, even comparing him to Chelsea hero John Terry in the process.

Disasi hasn't received universal acclaim though; Tim Sherwood isn't a fan of Disasi and thinks he is 'one of their worst players' at Chelsea.

Newcastle seemingly still rate Disasi though and could finally bring him to St James' Park having considered him a year ago.
