A UEFA Europa League outfit are now set to snap up a player Tottenham only just released on a free transfer.

As they say, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and if all goes well for the player, Spurs may look back on this decision with regret.

So, who is about to join a UEFA Europa League side after being released by Tottenham? Let’s take a look…

OGC Nice set to sign Tanguy Ndombele

Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed a story from Foot Mercato – which states that Tanguy Ndombele is all set to join OGC Nice on a free transfer.

The France international was released by Tottenham at the end of last season following an unsuccessful loan spell at Galatasaray – where he received criticism from Turkish media for his performances.

It came after Ndombele also endured difficult loan spells at Lyon and Napoli – with Spurs deciding to make him a free agent before signing Archie Gray in a £30m deal to bolster the midfield.

The Frenchman is now set to sign a two-year contract with OGC Nice, who finished fifth in Ligue 1 last season, after rejecting offers from Saudi Arabia.

Ndombele could even face Tottenham next season, with Spurs also partaking in the UEFA Europa League alongside OGC Nice.

Spurs must learn from failed £53.8m deal

Tottenham spent £53.8m to sign Ndombele from Lyon back in June 2019, which was a club record fee at the time.

However, the 27-year-old had never really shown his talent across several consecutive campaigns, so there were question marks about his consistency, something he struggled with hugely in north London amid flashes of brilliance.

Therefore, whenever Tottenham next decide to splash over £50m on a signing, Johan Lange and his colleagues on the recruitment team need to do their homework extensively, or else Spurs could sleepwalk into signing another flash in the pan like Ndombele.
