Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori has taken to social media to express his excitement after making his return in their 5-1 Premier League win over Crystal Palace on Saturday (December 21).

The 22-year-old hadn’t played for Mikel Arteta’s side since their 5-2 win over West Ham at the end of November due to a groin injury.

Calafiori came on as a substitute in the win over Palace, replacing young Myles Lewis-Skelly and providing the assist for Arsenal’s fifth goal.

Gabriel Jesus opened the scoring in the sixth minute before Crystal Palace forward Ismaila Sarr equalised with a fine finish just five minutes later.

The Brazilian then scored his fifth goal in his last two games, both against Palace, almost immediately after Sarr leveled things up to restore the visitor’s lead.

Kai Havertz got in on the action in the 38th minute to make it 3-1 as the two sets of players went down the tunnel for half-time.

Gabriel Martinelli made it 4-1 on the hour mark before Calafiori set up Declan Rice to round off the scoring and earn an impressive away win.

The Italian defender has missed ten games through injury since joining the North London club with Ben White, Takehiro Tomiyasu, and Oleksandr Zinchenko all still on the sidelines.

Calafiori took to Instagram after the game to celebrate, saying: “Great to be back! Big congrats to the team for this amazing away win.”

The left-back has started ten of his 14 games across all competitions, scoring one goal, and providing one assist in his 868 minutes on the pitch.

Arsenal will host strugglers Ipswich Town on Friday (December 27) as they seek to remain with in touching distance of league leaders Liverpool.
