Arsenal fell to their first Champions League defeat of the season as Inter Milan ran out 1-0 winners at the San Siro.

The Gunners lost in controversial circumstances as they conceded a contentious spot kick whilst being denied a solid penalty shout of their own.

Late on in the first half, Yann Sommer clattered into Mikel Merino, his fist appearing to make contact with the Arsenal man's head as he tried to punch a cross away.

Then, just before half-time, a free-kick was whipped in and a flick towards Merino saw the ball hit his outstretched hand.

Despite Merino being a yard away from where the ball was delivered, it was adjudged to be a penalty, which Hakan Calhanoglu duly put away.

Speaking after the game, Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi paid Arsenal a huge compliment and shared what he felt caused his side the most problems.

Simone Inzaghi says Arsenal are ‘one of the best teams’ Inter Milan have played in 2024/25 Champions League

Inzaghi, speaking to reporters after the game, said: "It is a very important victory.

“We had to fight for it against a very strong, intense team that caused us problems above all from set plays.

"Arsenal are one of the best teams I have seen so far in the Champions League this season.

We started very well, then in the second half defended really well. We wanted the victory in front of our fans.

"Naturally, we are proud to have got four points from two games against Manchester City and Arsenal, above all with such strong performances.”

Inzaghi went on to say: “We knew the intensity of the game and we must not stop. Arsenal impressed me with their intensity and organization.”
