Why the 2025 January transfer window closes on February 3rd

The January transfer window is now open – with many Premier League clubs expected to do business.
Ange Postecoglou has already admitted that Tottenham will look to strengthen, saying: "We will try and reinforce. Where and what number we'll have to wait and see.
"You don't just want to panic and bring in anybody that you don't think will help our cause in the back half of the year, but I think we've already shown we are pretty methodical and prudent about our work. We'll make sure we'll bring somebody in who is going to help us."
Elsewhere, Manchester United are just seven points above the relegation zone at the time of writing, so you would assume Ruben Amorim wants reinforcements as well.

Interestingly, those in the Premier League will have extra time to negotiate new signings this season, with the January transfer window actually closing on February 3rd – but why is that? Let’s take a look.
Premier League keen to “ensure harmonisation” with other major leagues in Europe
A statement from the Premier League back in May 2024 explains: “The winter window will open on Wednesday 1st January 2025 and will close at 23:00 GMT on Monday 3rd February 2025.
“To ensure harmonisation with the major leagues in Europe, the closing dates were set following discussions with the EFL (English Football League), DFL (Deutsche Fußball Liga) Serie A, La Liga, and LFP (Ligue de Football Professionnel) who will all close their Summer and Winter windows on 30th August and 3rd February respectively.”
With this structure, there will be no chance of a Premier League side losing a key man to another European league after the deadline with no way of replacing them.
How long is the January transfer window?
With this new deadline in place, the 2025 Winter transfer window will last 34 days.
Likely signings for Premier League clubs
Manchester City are expected to be busy – with a new central midfielder on the wishlist after Rodri suffered a serious knee injury.
The likes of Martin Zubimendi, Joshua Kimmich and Tijjani Reijnders have been linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium, so keep an eye on that situation.
In regards to the aforementioned Tottenham, Postecoglou desperately needs a new central defender having been forced to use a pairing of Yves Bissouma and Archie Gray recently, due to injuries.
Spurs are monitoring Ko Itakura of Borussia Monchengladbach as a potential option – and it would be a shock if the north Londoners failed to make any defensive additions given their current situation.
