Aston Villa sent shockwaves across European football this week as they defeated Bayern Munich in their Champions League encounter on Wednesday.

The Villans finished fourth last season to quality for Europe’s premier club competition, and they’ve got two wins from two so far.

Villa ran out 3-0 winners over Young Boys in their first game of the tournament, though they were very much favourites in that fixture.

However, few would have expected Unai Emery’s charges to triumph against Bayern, one of Europe’s elite clubs and in great form ahead of the game.

Jhon Duran was the match-winner in the 79th minute with a quickly-hit effort that caught out Manuel Neuer, who was off his line.

Now, talkSPORT pundit Jamie O’Hara has shared an opinion about Villa that left radio show co-host Jason Cundy baffled.

Jamie O’Hara would be fine with Aston Villa winning Champions League

O’Hara, who is well known for his allegiance towards former club Tottenham, took a call from a Villa fan who believed the Villans would win another European trophy before Spurs will.

“If you do, fair play,” said O’Hara. as per the talkSPORT website. "I've got nothing against Villa.

“I like them as a football club, the fans are great, it's a huge club. I used to love playing at Villa Park, it's a great stadium…"

Cundy duly questioned why his co-host would want a rival Premier League club to lift silverware.

"Spurs are not in it so if I was going to pick any team to win it, yeah Aston Villa,” said O’Hara. “They're the fourth place team, they haven't won it in how many years?"

Cundy went on to say: "I don't want Villa to win it. You make me laugh, right. You don't hope they go on and win it. You don't."

O'Hara didn't back down, saying: "I don't want Arsenal winning it! I don't care if City win it. Liverpool, they've won it six times! If Aston Villa went and got in the finals, I'd be rooting for Aston Villa."

Sky’s the limit for Aston Villa

It wasn’t that long ago that Villa were plying their trade in the Championship and, even after going back up, were in the relegation picture.

However, since Emery has taken the reins at Villa Park, the club has embarked on a remarkable upward trajectory that has been the envy of most other Premier League clubs.

The Villans have improved with each passing season and were worthy top-four finishers last term, earning themselves a spot in the Champions League.

Normally, when a club returns to the Champions League after a long time out, expectations are fairly low. If Villa had given their all against Bayern and lost, fans would’ve surely still been content.

However, Villa only went and repeated their historic result from the 1982 European Cup final, showing that they can beat anyone on their day.

As long as Villa are in it, they are able to win it. They won’t be among the favourites, but neither were Porto when they won it in 2004.

And neither were Greece at Euro 2024, yet they won the tournament. And neither were Leicester in the 2015/16 Premier League season. And so on and so forth.
