Wigan Athletic looked into a potential move for Blackpool striker Jordan Rhodes in the last transfer window, according to reporter Alan Nixon on his Patreon page.

Wigan Athletic considered the experienced attacker but nothing materialised before the deadline. They are now stuck with what they have got until January, unless they decide to delve into the free agent market over the next couple of months.

Rhodes, 34, stayed put at Blackpool and is under contract at Bloomfield Road until next year. He spent last season on loan with the Tangerines from Huddersfield Town and scored 15 goals in all competitions.

It remains to be seen at this stage whether Shaun Maloney will rekindle his interest in the player this winter. He could be given a new lease of life under the new Seasiders manager Steve Bruce. With that in mind, here is a look at three alternative options who the Latics should eye…

Who is the manager of Blackpool?

Martyn Waghorn

He is a free agent after cutting ties with Derby County at the end of the last campaign. The forward helped the Rams gain promotion from League One along with Portsmouth and Oxford United but they decided not to extend his stay and he has been weighing up his options since the end of June.

Waghorn, 34, played for Wigan Athletic from 2014 to 2015 and scored eight goals in 41 games. He has also had spells in the past at Sunderland, Leicester City, Rangers, Ipswich Town, Coventry City and Huddersfield Town and is an experienced as Rhodes.

Aaron Connolly

Hull City released the Republic of Ireland international this past summer and he needs to find a new home sooner rather than later. He needs to join a team where he is guaranteed regular minutes at this stage of his career and he would be a useful option for the Latics if they decided to try and get him.

The attacker played for Brighton and Hove Albion before joining the Tigers on an initial loan deal in January 2023. He later joined them permanently and found the net on eight occasions last term under their former manager Liam Rosenior before heading out the exit door.

Scott Hogan

He would give Wigan Athletic more competition and depth up front after they missed out on Rhodes last month. Birmingham City parted company with him a couple of months ago following their relegation to the third tier along with Rotherham United and Huddersfield Town.

Hogan still hasn’t found a team and will be considering what to do next. The 32-year-old has played 407 games to date altogether and has scored 131 goals having also had stints at Rochdale, Brentford, Aston Villa, Sheffield United and Stoke City.
