Charlton Athletic will be hoping a fruitful January transfer window can breathe life into their faltering 2024/25 campaign.

Charlton Athletic came into the season with high hopes but they’ve been unable to find any vein of form and sit outside the promotion picture as a result.

Of course, there’s plenty of time for things to change. However, sitting in 12th place in the League One table with only 23 points from 18 games, the Addicks are far off where they expected to be this campaign.

To kick their season into action, some winter additions wouldn’t go amiss at The Valley. To open up space for new signings, offloading some players could be beneficial, though there are some who will likely have their eyes on exits regardless.

Here, we pick out three Charlton Athletic players who should be looking to leave this winter…

Tayo Edun

Starting off with the most obvious candidate of the three, it’s clear that Tayo Edun needs a fresh start.

The 26-year-old, who can play in midfield or at left-back, hasn’t been able to return to the heights he hit with Lincoln City in the 2020/21 campaign and after moving to The Valley in the summer of 2023, the time may have come for him to embark on another new chapter.

Edun has started just two games for Charlton Athletic this season, both coming in the EFL Trophy. He is yet to play in League One having been named in just two matchday squads.

Zach Mitchell

Next up is Zach Mitchell, who can no doubt be an asset for Charlton Athletic in the years to come. In the meantime though, while Jones isn’t using him, he’ll be better off gaining game time out on loan.

He spent the 2023/24 campaign with League Two side Colchester United and could benefit from heading back to that level for the sake of his development. Otherwise, he’ll only be cover for the Addicks and perhaps called upon in cup competitions.

Nathan Asiimwe

Last but not least is another promising youngster who could benefit from a loan in Nathan Asiimwe.

The versatile Ugandan prospect spent a short stint with Hartlepool United earlier this season and found a good amount of game time, adding to the experience he has already gained with Charlton Athletic. The 19-year-old has played 28 times for the club’s first-team.

However, opportunities have eluded him since his recall and a new loan seems the best option.
