Shrewsbury Town have announced that Charles Sagoe Jr has returned to Arsenal, as per their official club website.
Shrewsbury Town landed the youngster on loan in the summer and he has since made 18 appearances in all competitions for the League One side. However, he didn’t score or get an assist.
Sagoe Jr, 20, was given the green light to link up with the Football League side to get some experience under his belt. Arsenal now have a big decision to make on what to do with him for the second-half of the season.
In this latest update regarding his situation, the Shrews have confirmed that his temporary deal has been cut short and that he has gone back to the Emirates Stadium.
Shrewsbury Town are currently sat in 22nd place in the third tier table and are in the bottom four along with Burton Albion, Cambridge United and Crawley Town.
Shrewsbury Town loan end
Shrewsbury Town brought in Sagoe Jr to bolster their attacking department.
However, his time with the Shrews hasn’t gone to plan.
After acquiring him, their former boss Paul Hurst said, as per BBC Sport: “We have lacked options in those wide areas so I’m delighted to get him in.
“He’s a player we have been interested in since January. He opted to go to Swansea and realistically that is understandable for an opportunity in the league higher. It didn’t quite work out but our interest remained and the fact we have been interested for some time has helped our case.”
As Hurst alluded to, Sagoe Jr spent time at Swansea City in the last campaign. However, he played only twice for the Swans under Luke Williams.
The Londoner was on the books at Fulham before switching to Arsenal back in 2015.
He has since been a regular for the Gunners at various different youth levels in the past.
Sagoe Jr made his first and only senior appearance for Mikel Arteta’s side in a Carabao Cup clash against fellow top flight outfit Brentford in September last year.
What now?
The player’s chances of getting into Arsenal’s starting XI are slim due to the abundance of options that they have at their disposal in his position. Therefore, another loan exit would do him good.
Shrewsbury Town lost 1-0 away at Leyton Orient last time out.
Gareth Ainsworth’s side face Huddersfield Town at home up next this weekend.
