Bolton Wanderers’ assistant manager Peter Atherton has said goalkeeper Nathan Baxter has sustained a muscle ‘strain’.

Bolton Wanderers were forced to leave the stopper out of their weekend clash against Shrewsbury Town. Luke Southwood came in for him as they ended up drawing 2-2 with the Shrews after goals by Kyle Dempsey and Szabolcs Schon.

Baxter, 25, now has the international break to recover as he looks to get back out on the pitch. He has made nine appearances so far this season in all competitions, eight of which have come in the league.

In this latest update regarding his condition, Atherton has said, as per a report by The Bolton News: “I am not 100 per cent certain with that but he got a bit of a strain, so fingers crossed the international break is coming up now and that will give him as much time to recover as possible.”

Getting Baxter back after the international break would be a boost for Bolton Wanderers.

He is a safe pair of hands for them between the sticks and is someone who they can trust.

The Trotters signed him in June 2023 and he has been with their number one since then.

Baxter helped the North West outfit reach the play-off final in the last campaign but they were beaten at Wembley by Oxford United.

His contract at the ToughSheet Community Stadium expires in June next year and they risk losing him for nothing as things stand.

The Londoner rose up through the academy ranks at Chelsea but never played for their first-team.

Instead, he had loan spells away from Stamford Bridge with the likes of Metropolitan Police, Solihull Moors, Woking, Yeovil Town, Ross County, Accrington Stanley and Hull City to get some experience.

What now?

Bolton Wanderers will assess Baxter and see how he is.

They face Aston Villa Under-21’s in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy tomorrow night and he won’t play in that.

The Trotters’ next league fixture is on 19th October at home to Burton Albion as they look to return to winning ways.
