Birmingham City target Lennard Maloney has been the subject of a concrete offer from Mainz 05, according to reporter Florian Plettenberg.

Birmingham City made a number of ambitious signings in the summer transfer window and with January now underway, eye-catching targets are back on the radar at BCFC.

The Blues are yet to make a breakthrough in the hunt for new signings but they’ve already been linked with a number of players. Among those rumoured to be on the radar is American midfielder Lennard Maloney, who plays in Germany for FC Heidenheim.

The first reports of the League One side’s interest revealed other clubs at higher levels were keen and now, a concrete offer has been lodged.

Writing on X, reporter Florian Plettenberg states Birmingham City target Maloney is the subject of an approach from Bundesliga side Mainz 05. It seems they’re eager to strike a deal in advance of the summer, when his contract at Heidenheim expires.

A winter move is not ruled out but at the moment, no talks have been held with Maloney’s club with an offer only made to the player.

The new development could kick the battle for Maloney into action with BCFC surely eager not to miss out on a deal.

A step too far?

Birmingham City have already shown the pulling power and financial muscle they have. They’ve pulled off deals no League One side in previous history would be able to as they build for a big future.

However, they are still a League One club playing League One football. As such, targeting a player who has been starting in the Bundesliga this season seems a step too far.

The Blues have persuaded players from higher leagues to make the drop before but with Maloney playing regularly in one of Europe’s top leagues, and clubs keen on keeping him there, it feels a step too far to persuade him to St. Andrew’s.

Other areas of focus

While Maloney may be a tough player to bring in, Birmingham City will not be lowering their standards.

They’ll be eager to bring in players who are capable of finding joy at a higher level, just as they did in the summer. Defensive midfield looks to be a position of focus while the backline could also do with bolstering to pave the way for some departures.

It seems unlikely to be a hectic BCFC transfer window, but there’s scope for some more statement additions for sure.
