Humphrys out: Barnsley team news and predicted XI to face Cambridge United

03/21/2025 10:05 AM
Barnsley host Cambridge United this weekend as two of the most out-of-form sides in the division face off at Oakwell.
Barnsley have only triumphed in one of their five most recent home outings – losing on three occasions – and have been defeated in eight of their past 14 at Oakwell, while only winning four in that time.
Though the Tykes conceded the winner in the 90th minute against Mansfield Town, they can have no complaints with the scoreline, having created just one big chance compared to the winners’ four.
Barnsley have only scored once in their past three games and have failed to find the back of the net in five of their last 11. This has been their downfall in their push for the play-offs
Interim manager Conor Hourihane has only been in charge for one game following the sacking of Darrell Clarke on March 12th, and he finds his side nine points behind 6th-placed Huddersfield Town, who occupy the final promotion playoff spot.
Barnsley have lost three consecutive matches.
Barnsley team news
Barnsley are going to be without their two first-team goalkeepers this weekend. Jackson Smith is going to be out for the foreseeable, Hourihane told The Yorkshire Post.
Back-up ‘keeper Joe Gauci is currently with parent club Aston Villa for rehabilitation.
The Tykes will also be without Marc Roberts after he went off against Mansfield with a concussion.
In more positive news, Donovan Pines and Fabio Jalo are both back in training for Barnsley. Neither are quite ready to start, but Hourihane believes they can both play a part against Cambridge this weekend.
Predicted XI
(4-4-2)
Flavell; Lembikisa, Gevigney, McCarthy, O’Keeffe; Benson, Russell, Connell, Phillips; Keillor-Dunn Watters
Hourihane has confirmed that Kieran Flavell will be between the sticks for Barnsley this weekend. He did well in League Two and has earned his chance.
With Roberts out and Barnsley light on defensive options, Dexter Lembikisa comes in at right-back.
The other chance for Barnsley sees Max Watters come into the side up-front in place of Stephen Humphrys. Watters replaced Humphrys in the 46th minute against Cambridge with Hourihane unhappy with his performance.
As such, Watters could get a shot from the get-go here.
