Lincoln City director Jez George shared his delight over Jovon Makama’s development after working ‘really hard’ to sign him four years ago.

Lincoln City have seen Makama work his way through their academy ranks ever since signing him four years ago upon his exit from Derby County.

He’s one of a handful of players in the Imps’ first-team squad who have become regulars after coming through the academy. At only 20, he has already played 63 times for the club, chipping in with six goals in the process.

And, his efforts in the early stages of the 2024/25 campaign have warranted a new contract agreement. Makama has penned a deal with Lincoln City until the summer of 2027 having become Michael Skubala’s starting striker in the early stages of the season.

Upon the announcement of Makama’s new deal, director of football Jez George has shed some light on the work that went into bringing him to Sincil Bank after he was let go by Derby County at 16.

As quoted by the club’s official website, the key Lincoln City figure said:

“We worked really hard to sign Jovon after his release from Derby County at 16 years old and could see his huge potential.

“He has now matured, developed an elite mentality and therefore has been able to translate this potential into consistently high-level performances in League One.

“Jovon’s physical attributes mean he has a really high ceiling so we are delighted to have agreed this contract which enables us to continue working with him and collectively enjoy the result of his continued development on the pitch.”

A developing star

Makama is still very much finding his feet and developing but Lincoln City look to have a great prospect in their hands in the form of the former Derby County youngster.

His time in the starting XI will be of huge value to him as he pushes on. As George highlighted, he has the physical attributes, it’s just about developing the other side of his game to add more end product and technicality.

All of that will come in good time with more action and with a great boss like Michael Skubala at the helm, Makama will be confident of making further strides forward over the course of his long-term deal at Sincil Bank.

Looking forward

Regarding on-pitch matters, Lincoln City will be out to continue their strong start to the season once the international break is done and dusted.

A challenging trip to Wrexham awaits next weekend. The Imps are only two points behind the North Welsh outfit having played a game less, so it could be a big chance to overtake Phil Parkinson’s side.

A win could move Skubala and co into the League One top two having lost just once early on.
