Docherty, 28, made the switch down to London over the summer and was named as their skipper by Nathan Jones shortly after. He was also handed the number 10 shirt and has made 11 appearances in all competitions so far this season, chipping in with a single goal.

He has said, as per the official club website: “There’s a bit of time now between the next few games. We have another huge week coming up – three games in a week – and we will look to maximise that as well.

“We have a very good and very talented squad; you can see that has been utilised this week. On Saturday the subs came off the bench and really gave us that extra bit of energy and quality. We have that all over the pitch and it’s a real fight to get in the team. That’s what you saw on Saturday is people desperate to keep their place in the team.”

Charlton Athletic signed Docherty to add more quality to their midfield department.

He penned a three-year deal with the Addicks, with the club holding an option for a further 12 months on top of that.

The Scotsman seems to have adapted well to life with his new team and has slotted in nicely into Jones’ starting XI alongside the likes of Conor Coventry and Karoy Anderson.

Docherty joined Rangers as a youngster from Hamilton Academical and was loaned out to Shrewsbury Town and Hibernian during his time at Ibrox.

Hull City snapped him up in 2020 and he spent four years at the MKM Stadium, scoring seven goals in 142 games altogether.

He helped the Tigers win the third tier title in his first year under their former manager Grant McCann.

His game time started to dry up in East Yorkshire last term, hence why he was released in late June.

What now?

Charlton Athletic will hope that they can build on their victory over Birmingham City with the same again against Stockport County next weekend.

Jones’ side are only outside the play-offs on goal difference.
