Bristol Rovers have ‘more than enough quality’ to stay up in League One this season, their former player Adam Virgo believes.

Bristol Rovers are currently sat in 19th place in the table with 22 points on the board from 20 fixtures.

They are three points above the drop zone after their 1-1 draw at home to Wrexham over the weekend. Attacker Promise Omochere got their goal against the Red Dragons near the end to salvage a point.

Virgo has written in the Football League Paper (22.12.24, page 39): “Whoever the new manager is will largely have to work with what he has got, but that’s not the end of the world.

“I look at that Bristol Rovers squad and there’s more than enough quality there for things to change very quickly. They’re only a few points behind the likes of Wigan Athletic and Rotherham, so nobody should be panicking yet.

“What’s imperative, though, is that whoever takes over does their research, understands what a massive club they are joining, and is prepared for the pressure and scrutiny that comes with representing Bristol Rovers.”

Bristol Rovers latest

Bristol Rovers have recently parted company with Matt Taylor following their poor run of form.

They made the decision to cut ties with the former Exeter City and Rotherham United man as they look to rise away from the bottom four.

The Gas are now weighing up who to bring in next and they need to ensure that they get this appointment right.

After sacking Taylor, a club statement read: Bristol Rovers FC can confirm that Manager Matt Taylor and Assistant Manager Wayne Carlisle have been relieved of their first team duties.

“The Club would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Matt and Wayne for all their hard work during their time with Bristol Rovers, and we wish them both every success in their respective future careers.”

Michael Wimmer has emerged as the leading candidate for the vacant position at the Memorial Ground, as per a report by BristolLive.

The 44-year-old German last managed Austria Wien and has been out of the game since May.

Wimmer has also had coaching spells in the past at FC Nurnberg, Augsburg and Stuttgart.

What now?

Whoever Bristol Rovers bring in will have the opportunity to add to their ranks in January.

The Gas are in action on Boxing Day with an away trip to Exeter City.
