Gordon, 28, has been on the books of the Saints since 2015 and was their captain. He made exactly 200 appearances for them, chipping in with four goals and two assists.

He has now moved to Fir Park for a new challenge and has told Motherwell’s website: “It’s great to be here. I know a lot of the boys and have played against them so many times. I just know this is a good club and a good place to be.

“There have been a lot of conversations between the manager (Stuart Kettlewell) and myself. The project and ambition is clear to see and I’m glad I can be a part of that.”

Stockport County target joins another team

Stockport County will have to look elsewhere for defensive reinforcements following Gordon’s decision to stay in Scotland.

He doesn’t really fit in with their recruitment policy over recent times of bringing in younger players with a view to developing them.

Gordon played for Dundee and Raith Rovers as a youngster before linking up with Hearts in 2014.

He went on to play two first-team games for the Jam Tarts and was also loaned out to Arbroath to get some experience under his belt before he left Edinburgh permanently.

St Johnstone snapped him up nine years ago and he had early temporary stints away at Elgin City and Peterhead to boost his development.

Gordon has been a key player for the Saints over recent years but has now left for a new challenge.
