Charlton Athletic had a busy summer on the transfer front as they bolstered their ranks with a host of new arrivals.

Charlton Athletic are aiming for promotion from League One this season under the guidance of former Luton Town, Stoke City and Southampton boss Nathan Jones.

They won their first three fixtures of the new campaign on the spin against Wigan Athletic, Leyton Orient and Bolton Wanderers. However, they have lost to Reading and then drawn to Rotherham United in their last two games.

The Addicks are back in action on Saturday with an away trip to Shrewsbury Town as they look to return to winning ways. In the meantime, here is a look at their strongest starting XI following their recruitment drive…

Starting Charlton Athletic XI

(3-5-2)

Mannion; Mitchell, Jones, Gillesphey; Ramsey, Docherty, Berry, Coventry, Small; Godden, Ahadme.

New goalkeeper signing Will Mannion arrived from fellow third tier outfit Cambridge United and starts ahead of Ashley Maynard-Brewer. Charlton Athletic didn’t end up bringing in another goalkeeper.

In defence, Alex Mitchell, Lloyd Jones and Macaulay Gillesphey make up the centre-back trio. With exciting wing-back pair Kayne Ramsey and Thierry Small gliding up and down the flanks either side of them.

Midfielder Greg Docherty, who moved to The Valley after leaving Hull City, has become the Addicks’ captain. Luke Berry and Conor Coventry are two very solid options alongside him in the middle of the park.

Up front, Charlton Athletic have the experience of Matty Godden. He linked up with them from Coventry City in the Championship. They also have Gassan Ahadme, who has been on the books at Ipswich Town in the past.

The players left out

Maynard-Brewer provides back-up to Mannion in goal and will be ready to step up if needed.

Dan Potts and Tennai Watson add more competition and depth to their defensive department and are two consistent performers.

The Addicks have a few different players to call on in midfield if required such as recent recruit Allan Campbell, who could arguably start when he is ready to.

Jones has the likes of Tyreece Campbell, Dan Kanu and Chuks Aneke at his disposal as alternatives to Godden and Ahadme. Aneke got himself on the scoresheet in their 1-1 draw with Rotherham United last time out and his experience comes in handy.

The ex-Arsenal man is a handy player to have in and around the dressing room and has been a good servant to the club.

Charlton Athletic are in a strong position right now and have cover in all areas which is a big boost. There are some big teams in their league this term like Birmingham City, as well as big spending Wrexham and Stockport County, but they should be confident of doing well.
