Bradford City boss Graham Alexander has said they could dip into the free agent market for a defender.

Bradford City have a few injury problems in that department and have been left a little short of options.

The Bantams are back in League Two action this weekend with a home clash against AFC Wimbledon. They have 10 points on the board from their first six fixtures and are sat in 7th place.

Alexander has said, as per The Yorkshire Post: “Yes, it (free agent market) is (an option), with the recent injuries we have picked up. We’ve been kept abreast of the squad that has been training with the PFA, so I’ve asked the club’s PFA (Professional Footballers Association) representative to keep me informed as to who is training there – and any games going on and who is playing in those games.

“We’ve had our head of recruitment Stephen Gent go to a couple of those games as well, just to keep our eye in. Even when we had a fully-fit squad, just to be ready if needed. It’s something we are looking at now because of the injuries we have obviously got in certain areas of the pitch. I feel there are good players who are still unattached.”

Here is a look at some options…

Who is the manager of Blackpool?

Anthony Stewart

The 31-year-old remains without a club and could be a shrewd addition for Bradford City. He is experienced and has played just under 350 games in his career to date.

The centre-back cut ties with Aberdeen at the end of the last campaign following a loan spell at MK Dons in the fourth tier. He has been available since late June and will be weighing up what to do next.

Tom Clayton

Swindon Town parted company with him in the summer after he spent two years at the County Ground. He played 38 matches for the Robins so knows the league already and at the age of 23, he still has potential to get better in the future.

He rose up through the academy ranks at Liverpool and progressed up through the various youth levels of the Premier League giants. The ex-Scotland youth international didn’t play for the Reds’ first-team though before his switch down to Wiltshire.

Mark Beevers

Beevers is available for nothing after leaving Perth Glory a couple of months ago and will be considering his options. He moved to Australia in 2022 but could Bradford City now try and tempt him back to England ?.

The 34-year-old has been at Sheffield Wednesday, Millwall, Bolton Wanderers and Peterborough United in the past. He has made over 600 outings so far since making his professional debut back in January 2007.
