Carlisle United are plotting a move for MK Dons sporting director Liam Sweeting, according to a report from Football Insider.

Carlisle United have had an awful start to life back in League Two. With just three points from the opening six games, the Cumbrians will have expected better after being relegated from League One last season.

After a very busy summer transfer window, a fight for the play-offs will be the aim this year. With former striker Charlie Wyke returning to the club after spells in League One and the Championship along with Jordan Jones, the signings looked positive for the club.

However, amid their poor start, manager Paul Simpson was sacked, and a replacement has been on the radar since. While a new boss is crucial for the club, it seems Carlisle United are looking at a full restructure.

According to Football Insider, the Cumbrians are set to make a move for MK Dons sporting director Liam Sweeting. Many candidates have applied for the role and Sweeting is one under real consideration.

Sweeting has been with the club since 2018 and was promoted to sporting director back in 2021.

Who is the manager of Blackpool?

Why are they interested?

Despite being in League Two, Sweeting is very highly regarded in the world of recruitment.

Since he became sporting director, MK have turned big profits on some of their key assets, some of whom have moved on since to higher levels.

The biggest name of those is now Brighton midfielder Matt O’Riley. O’Riley was signed on a free in 2021 and sold for nearly £2m the following year to Celtic, then earning a move to the Premier League this summer for nearly £30m.

Championship regulars Scott Twine and Harry Darling are others to have been sold for big fees under Sweeting, while Max Dean is the latest following this summer’s move to Belgian side Gent.

MK raid?

Sweeting is not the only MK Dons man that Carlisle United are taking an interest in. Head coach Mike Williamson is very much in the frame to become the club’s new boss.

Williamson has been at MK since October last year, leaving Gateshead to join the Dons. The former Newcastle United man did an excellent job with the Heed, leading them from a National League North relegation fight to the National League play-offs in four years.

He then took MK Dons from 16th in League Two to the play-offs before being defeated by the eventual winner Crawley Town. However, after a poor start to this season Williamson may feel a fresh start back up north with Carlisle could be a good move for his career.

Should he and Sweeting make the move to Cumbria it could be useful for the club with the two already having a working relationship.

Carlisle United will hope to have a new head coach in place before their trip to Swindon Town this weekend.
