Blackburn Rovers defender Connor O’Riordan is poised to return to Crewe Alexandra on loan, as detailed in a report by the Lancashire Telegraph.
Blackburn Rovers are expected to send the centre-back back to the League Two club this winter. He has recently returned to Rovers following his temporary spell in League One at Cambridge United.
O’Riordan, 21, was given the green light to link up with the U’s last August to get some experience under his belt. He went on to play eight games for Garry Monk’s side, four of which came in the league, before his stay was cut short.
In this latest update regarding his situation at Ewood Park this month, the Lancashire Telegraph claim he is ‘set’ to go back to Crewe Alexandra to get some game time. Lee Bell’s side are sat in 2nd place in the table behind Walsall as they look to gain promotion.
Blackburn Rovers defender Connor O’Riordan to return to Crewe Alexandra
O’Riordan needs to be getting as many minutes as possible at this stage of his career so going back to Crewe Alexandra isn’t a bad move.
He is linking up with a team he knows already and who are full of confidence at the moment.
Blackburn Rovers landed the player as one for the future in January last year and he penned a long-term contract until 2028.
Their former Director of Football Gregg Broughton told their website at the time: “We are delighted to welcome Connor to Blackburn Rovers and I would like congratulate Crewe for the incredible development work they have done over many years.
“Connor will bring an aerial presence in both boxes, a calmness in possession and a desire to do the ugly things needed to be a first-class defender.
“We have had to be patient with this signing, after initially having offers turned down by Crewe in the summer, and we have beaten significant interest from other clubs to conclude the deal.”
O’Riordan rose up through the academy ranks at Crewe Alexandra and was loaned out to Kidsgrove Athletic, Nantwich Town and Raith Rovers as a teenager.
He made 58 appearances for the Railwaymen and chipped in with six goals before Blackburn Rovers swooped in.
What now for Connor O’Riordan at Blackburn Rovers?
His time at Cambridge United didn’t go to plan in the end so returning to Crewe Alexandra can help him prove a point.
Blackburn Rovers will monitor how he does in Cheshire ahead of the summer.
