Carlisle United have considered Altrincham’s Phil Parkinson and Gateshead’s Rob Elliot in their hunt for a new manager recently, according to reporter Pete O’Rourke on X.

Carlisle United have identified the National League pair as two potential replacements for Paul Simpson. However, they have now ‘agreed’ a deal with Mike Williamson from fellow League Two side MK Dons.

The Cumbrians made the decision to part company with Simpson following their poor start to the new season. They were relegated from League One earlier this year after finishing in the bottom four along with Fleetwood Town, Cheltenham Town and Port Vale and are now eyeing an immediate promotion.

In this latest managerial update regarding the Cumbrians, journalist O’Rourke has reported on X that they have looked at Parkinson and Elliot in the league below. However, they are now turning to Williamson as they look to start rising up the league table.

Parkinson has been at Altrincham since 2017 and has done an impressive job with the North West outfit.

He is closing in on five years with his current club having previously been at Nantwich Town.

The 43-year-old guided Alty to a 4th place finish last term but they were beaten in the play-offs in the end by eventual winners Bromley.

As for Elliot, Gateshead turned to him in October 2023 when Williamson left for MK Dons.

The 38-year-old won the FA Trophy last year after his side beat Solihull Moors on penalties in the final.

He has won 52.17% of games in charge of the North East club and they are currently sat 5th in the league at the moment.

As a player, Elliot was a goalkeeper for the likes of Charlton Athletic, Newcastle United and Watford and made 222 appearances before hanging up his gloves in 2022.

What now?

Both Parkinson and Elliot have caught the eye in the National League and it isn’t a surprise to see that Carlisle United have looked at them.

Williamson has more Football League experience in the dugout though and got MK Dons into the top seven last season.

His time in Buckinghamshire has turned a bit sour now after their slow start so a change of scene will do him good.

The Cumbrians will want to get a deal over the line sooner rather than later so they can boost their chances of getting some points on the board over the coming weeks.

They were beaten 3-2 at home by Fleetwood Town last time out and have sunk to 22nd, just a point above the drop zone where Accrington Stanley and Morecambe are placed.

Carlisle United are back in action this weekend with an away trip to Swindon Town.
