Southport have signed Jack Bentley following his exit from Tranmere Rovers, as announced by their official club website.

Bentley, 18, subsequently became a free agent in late June and has since been weighing up his options in the game.

In this latest update regarding his situation, Southport have confirmed on their website that they have snapped him up on a free transfer. He has linked up with the National League North side on a one-year contract.

Bentley spent two years at Tranmere Rovers and trained regularly with their first-team before featuring in pre-season friendlies and cup games. He never played for them in the league though.

The defender can play at either right-back or centre-back if needed.

His father, Jim, is currently the manager at Southport and has previously had spells in the past at Morecambe, AFC Fylde and Rochdale.

Bentley wasn’t the only player to part ways with Tranmere Rovers this past summer.

The League Two side also released Jean Belehouan, Mikey Davies, Ben Hockenhull, Rhys Hughes, Charlie Jolley, Ousmane Kane, Luis Lacey, Paul Lewis, Reece McAlear, Dan Pike, Conor Robson, Joe Starbuck and Joe Yarney.

Their boss Nigel Adkins said at the time, as per a report by WirralGlobe: “I’d like to thank all those players who are leaving us and wish them the best of luck for the future. We’ve got a group of players we know can do well in this division next season already on board but with scope to bring nine to ten players in over the summer as well to get to the group of 25 that I’m looking for.

“That takes time but we’re in a good position to start off and there’s vision to bring some good players in who will help boost the squad.”

What now?

Bentley hasn’t had to move far to join Southport and he will be looking to get plenty of game time with the non-league outfit.

As for Tranmere Rovers, they lost 2-0 at home to Bradford City last time out and face Bromley away this weekend.
