Gillingham midfielder Jonny Williams is putting his promotion experiences to use as the League Two side look to rise back to League One.

Gillingham started the campaign in fine form as they look to win promotion back to League One at the second time of asking.

They came up short last time around but there are high hopes at Priestfield with Mark Bonner at the helm. Only one defeat in the first eight games certainly boosted said hopes, but a run of three straight defeats has seen the mood drop a bit in Kent.

Nevertheless, the Gills remain in a respectable 5th and at such an early stage in a long and arduous season, they find themselves 5th in the League Two table.

There are a host of experienced heads in the group who have been there and done that. Among them is Jonny Williams, who has two promotions on his record with Crystal Palace and Charlton Athletic.

Now, speaking to Sky Bet, the Gillingham man has opened up on drawing from his past experiences to try and stay level-headed in the bid to win promotion from League Two. Speaking to Sky Bet, he said:

“I’ve been blessed enough to get promoted twice.

“I nearly did it with Swindon as well. We lost in the play-offs, but they’re very long seasons, and to get promoted, you’ve got to be pretty consistent.

“That’s the key thing we didn’t have last season, which is probably why we missed out on playoffs and the top three. We just weren’t as consistent as other teams, hence why we finished mid-table. Had we been more consistent, promotion was possible.

“It’s a long season, you’ve got to remain confident, even with setbacks,” the Gillingham man added.

“You can’t get too high with the highs when you sit at the top and too low when you lose a game. If you do lose a game, you need to respond quickly and win the next game as soon as possible and the manager’s [Mark Bonner] been drilling into us as soon as we do hit a blip, it’s about responding, recovering and winning the next game. You can’t go a full season winning every game.”
