Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones has refused to get embroiled in a war of words with Birmingham City’s Chris Davies.

Birmingham City head coach Davies said after the match that the Addicks have ‘spent a fortune’ this past summer.

When asked about those comments in his pre-Stockport County press conference, Jones has said, as per a report by London News Online: “There aren’t many Championship clubs who have spent what they spent. I don’t know what he classes as fortunes. We have spent more than a lot of League One sides, but I wouldn’t quite call it fortunes.

“We have been very thrifty in the transfer market. I don’t like commenting on others. Birmingham spent fortunes but if they can do that then there is no problem with that, from my point of view. I don’t want to get into an argument about it.

“We know how much we have spent and we can’t spend fortunes because there are restrictions at the club – financial fair play. So we can only spend what we can spend. Have we spent money on players? Absolutely. Is it fortunes compared to a lot of sides? It’s healthy, compared to other sides, and minute compared to others. It depends how you want to look at it.

“They are entitled to their opinions, all managers. I try not to get embroiled in arguments.”

Charlton Athletic manager has say on Birmingham City boss comments

Charlton Athletic delved into the transfer market to bring in the likes of Luke Berry, Greg Docherty, Gassan Ahadme, Josh Edwards and Allan Campbell, among others, to bolster their ranks.

Meanwhile, they cut ties with players such as Alfie May, George Dobson, Jack Payne and Diallang Jaiyesimi to free up space and funds in their squad to help pave the way for their new arrivals.

The Addicks have made a decent enough start to the campaign and are 8th in the table, just a point outside the play-offs.

As for Birmingham City, they are top of the league and their loss to Jones’ side was their first of this term.

They were relegated from the Championship already this year after finishing in the bottom three with Rotherham United and Huddersfield Town and they are eyeing an immediate promotion.

The Blues’ most eye-catching addition was striker Jay Stansfield on a permanent basis from Fulham.

What now?

Charlton Athletic are back in action this weekend with a home match against Stockport County.

Birmingham City, on the other hand, take on Lincoln City away.
