Chesterfield are close to signing Janoi Donacien following the end of his contract at Ipswich Town last summer, according to a report by TWTD.

Chesterfield are set to snap up the defender on a free transfer this month. They are currently sat in 10th place in the League Two table and are six points off the play-offs.

Donacien, 31, saw his deal at Ipswich Town expire in late June following their promotion from the Championship under Kieran McKenna. However, he has stuck around with the Tractor Boys since then whilst recovering from injury.

In this latest update regarding his future, TWTD report he is poised to link up with the Spirerites ahead of the second-half of the season as they look to get into the top seven. They are managed by former Portsmouth and Wigan Athletic boss Paul Cook and won promotion from the National League last year with Bromley.

Regarding his Ipswich Town situation, McKenna said back in August, as per the East Anglian Daily Times: “It’s a big positive to see him looking strong and showing the competitor he is. Beyond that any discussions (about a contract) will happen a little bit further down the line.

“But every single day that Janoi is in the building with us he’ll be an important member of this squad because he’s made such a fantastic contribution and everyone thinks so highly of him.”

The Tractor Boys signed him in 2019 and he helped them rise from League One to the Premier League.

He made 127 matches for the Suffolk club and also had loans away at Accrington Stanley and Fleetwood Town.

The Saint Lucia international has also had spells in the past at Luton Town, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, Tranmere Rovers, Wycombe Wanderers and Newport County.

What now?

A move to Chesterfield would help Donacien get some games and boost his fitness.

He would have to drop down to the fourth tier but he would be linking up with a team who are on the up.

Cook’s side are back in action this weekend with an away trip to Blundell Park to face Grimsby Town as they look to close the gap between them and the play-offs. They were beaten 2-1 at home by MK Dons last time out.
