Sunderland goalkeeper Matty Young has caught the attention of Premier League giants Manchester City, as per reporter Alan Nixon.
Sunderland boast one of the most highly regarded academies in the country they have another young star on the rise.
Matty Young took his time to break into the Salford City side during his loan spell but it is relishing the chance now.
At just 18, he has started the Ammies’ last eight games and conceded just one goal during that time. He has averaged a 7.88 match rating from FOTMob, helping his side win their last six games in a row.
Now, such impressive performances have attracted interest in the Sunderland ‘keeper. According to Alan Nixon, reporting on his Patreon, Manchester City are keeping an eye on his progress.
The Black Cats are in a strong position to keep hold of Young though. He is a boyhood fan of the club and only recently signed a new deal that keeps him contracted to the club until 2028.
With that said, Nixon has also reported that the Black Cats would be willing to sell their academy product if Man City offer them the right price.
Patterson’s successor?
Sections of the Sunderland support have been critical of Anthony Patterson, with some highlighting the distribution struggles he has. However, to suggest he is a problem is harsh given his form between the sticks over the last three years.
Patterson has made 139 appearances for the Black Cats now and has been consistent since day one. However, there is no denying Young will be a threat to his position as one of the highest-rated young English ‘keepers.
It would be no surprise if offers came in for Patterson, who has been linked with most of the Premier League by this point. If offers come in next summer and beyond, it would be no shock if Young is given the nod.
What next for Sunderland and Young?
Sunderland are set to take on Stoke City in the FA Cup next weekend before continuing their promotion push.
Young and Salford City however, face the daunting task of admirers Manchester City in the cup. Karl Robinson’s side beat Shrewsbury Town and Cheltenham Town to get to this point.
It will be interesting to see if Young plays in that game, especially now that City have been credited with an interest in his services.
