Tranmere Rovers leading race for 22-year-old defender

Tranmere Rovers are leading the chase to sign Inverness Caledonian Thistle left-back Cameron Harper, according to the Daily Record (live transfer blog, 28.05.24, 15.38).

Tranmere Rovers are interested in snapping up the defender this summer as they prepare for another year in League Two. They finished in 16th position in the table in the last campaign under former Southampton, Reading and Hull City boss Nigel Adkins.

Harper, 22, is out of contract at the end of next month and is yet to put pen-to-paper on a new deal meaning he is due to become a free agent soon. He couldn’t prevent Inverness Caledonian Thistle from relegation to Scottish League One recently.

In this latest update regarding his situation by the Daily Record, Tranmere Rovers are keen on luring him down the border to England as they look to bolster their ranks. Other unnamed teams are believed to be in the frame too though.

Who is this?

The Whites could see Harper as a useful long-term acquisition and someone to boost their defensive department.

They have a vacancy to fill in his position following James Norris and Jake Leake’s exits following their end of their respective loans from Liverpool and Hull City.

Harper has been on the books at Inverness Caledonian Thistle for his whole career to date and has risen up through the academy ranks of his local side.

He was a regular for them at various different youth levels before before making his first-team debut back in 2018 against Dunfermline Athletic.

The former Scotland youth international has made 163 appearances for the Highlands outfit in all competitions to date, chipping in with 12 goals and 21 assists. He also had a loan spell away at Elgin City in 2020 to get some experience under his belt.

He played 45 matches for them in this past season under Duncan Ferguson but is expected to head out the exit door now.

Tranmere Rovers’ summer so far

Tranmere Rovers are yet to sign anyone so far but are plotting potential targets.

Harper fits the profile for the Birkenhead club and has played a lot of games for someone still young up in Scotland.

The Whites have released a few players recently such as Jean Belehouan, Mikey Davies, Ben Hockenhull, Rhys Hughes, Charlie Jolley, Ousmane Kane, Luis Lacey, Paul Lewis, Reece McAlear, Dan Pike, Conor Robson, Joe Starbuck and Joe Yarney which has cleared up room for reinforcements.
