RC Lens have announced that Pau López (30) will not join on loan from Olympique de Marseille, despite having confirmed it yesterday. The Artois side were in the market for a goalkeeper in the wake of Brice Samba’s (30) departure to Rennes. Lens have allowed Samba to undergo a medical with Stade Rennais when it became clear they had secured his replacement in López. The Spain international goalkeeper has been loaned by Olympique de Marseille to Girona FC, where he only played one Copa del Rey game.

Both Marseille and Lens made the deal official and López even posed with a Sang et Or shirt. However, the deal has been canceled due to Girona’s requirement to keep the player until January 29, the date of the final Champions League matchday. Girona are currently 30th in the league and have close to no hope of qualifying for the playoff rounds. “While a total agreement had been reached between Racing Club de Lens, Olympique de Marseille and Pau López, the arrival of the Spanish international was canceled. Girona FC informed Olympique de Marseille today of its firm desire to keep the player until January 29, an unacceptable condition for Racing, which thus renounce this signing.”
