Liverpool would be the 'choice of the heart' for Lyon's Malick Fofana this summer but Newcastle United would be the 'choice of reason'.

That's according to agent Bobo Fofana, who has been discussing the 19-year-old and a potential move to the Premier League with Africa Foot.

Fofana has been earning admiring glances from around Europe this season after managing four goals and four assists in 24 games in Ligue 1 this season as well as six goals and one assist in nine games in the Europa League.

Liverpool have already been credited with an interest in him, particularly as doubts remain about Mohamed Salah's future, while Arsenal were also named as a potential destination.

Fofana believes Newcastle absolutely should be in the mix, though, stating they would be the logic choice for the winger.

"The choice of the heart would be Liverpool," he said.

"He has the potential to become a regular, and above all, we’d like to see him succeed African legends such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané, and Elhadj Diouf.

"Now, the choice of reason would be Newcastle, a well-structured club that could be a first step to gain experience before, perhaps, joining a top five European club."

"He has the profile to succeed in the Premier League. He possesses qualities similar to those of Manchester United’s Amad Diallo: speed, impact, and the ability to create chances. There’s no doubt he can shine."

Lyon, for their part, would be reluctant to lose their rising star, who they have tied to a contract until 2028 anyway.

They, though, may be forced to do so as they've been ordered to bring their finances under control by French football's financial watchdog, the DNCG.

They need to reduce debts or face being relegated from Ligue 1 and despite efforts on that front more sales are needed, something Liverpool, Newcastle and other suitors can take advantage of according to Fofana.

"He’s a valuable player for the squad, bringing speed and impact," he added.

"He has the potential to become a key part of the team and be a long-term player. However, as we know, OL is under the surveillance of the DNCG (National Football Commission) and will have to sell again this summer.

"Anything remains possible. Otherwise, he is gaining more and more maturity, and, above all, he knows how to be decisive on the national and European scene."
