A number of Liverpool youngsters caught the eye during an impressive win over Accrington Stanley on Saturday.

Although the Reds had been expected to easily dispatch Accrington, it was still an incredibly pleasing day as Arne Slot’s team ran out 4-0 winners.

There were threads to follow all over the pitch for Liverpool, from Rio Ngumoha’s first ever senior appearance, to Federico Chiesa getting his first goal for the Reds.

In amongst it all, one player who may have gone a little under the radar at Anfield was Tyler Morton.

Morton was playing for just the fourth time this season, but looked calm and accomplished in the middle of the pitch.

After the game, though, the Liverpool academy midfielder suggested that his lack of game time under Slot means that he could be on the move during the January transfer window.

Tyler Morton makes ‘selfish’ transfer claim

There is little question that Morton has deserved to be on the pitch more often this season.

The 22-year-old is coming off the back of two very good loans in the Championship and has looked the part whenever he’s played for Liverpool.

So, when asked about his limited chances this season by LFCTV, it was not a surprise to hear Morton say that he feels he deserves more of a look in.

“It’s been tough for me this season, minute’s wise,” he answered. “I think I’ve handled it very well, I’ve kept my head down and given it everything every day. I think I do deserve the chance. I got the chance today and hopefully people thought I took it. I think I had a good game and when you don’t get many chances you have to take them and I think I did today.”

Pushed on whether he’s ‘waiting to see what might happen’ in the window and if he could potentially leave on loan, Morton gave a candid response.

“This month’s obviously a big month for myself,” he answered. “It’s decision time and I think I’m ready to kick on and be a proper professional. Definitely I’m ready to kick on now and move up a step.

“If that’s here, if that’s somewhere else, I think football’s football and I’ve got to be a bit selfish and go with however I feel.”

Morton deserves more chances

You can hardly blame Morton for being a little frustrated after another good showing on Saturday.

The youngster has always delivered when given the chance for Liverpool and after two seasons of playing week-in-week-out, he has a right to have been disappointed by his game time.

There have already been suggestions that Morton is waiting for the green light to leave Liverpool this month, and it would now not be a surprise to see that happen.

However, we think that Morton’s showing against Accrington should have convinced Slot that he is good enough to keep around and trust a little more.

Liverpool need a good, ball-playing number six to ease the burden on Ryan Gravenberch. Morton has shown that he can be that player. The Reds could be on the verge of making a real mistake in the market in letting this homegrown talent leave.
