There are not many clubs bigger in world football than Liverpool.

Man United can challenge the Reds for the claim of being the biggest club in England, while on a world wide scale, Barcelona and Real Madrid, alongside Bayern Munich, are the others who can lay claim to the title.

The Spanish giants have been a problem for Liverpool for many years when it comes to the transfer front, as Barcelona have lured away the likes of Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho

Real Madrid are closing in on a deal for Trent Alexander-Arnold, and the La Liga champions have also been a club that have shopped on Merseyside a lot since the turn of the millennium, with the England international set to join that list.

Players who have moved from Liverpool to Real Madrid

One of the more famous moves made by a Liverpool star to Real Madrid occurred in 1999 as Steve McManaman made the switch to Spain after deciding to leave his boyhood club. This is a very similar situation Alexander-Arnold finds himself in now, and they are not the only ones.

Michael Owen would follow in the Englishman’s footsteps in 2004, with the former Reds striker leaving the Merseyside club upon the arrival of Rafael Benitez, and unfortunately for him, Liverpool would go on to win the Champions League that season.

A hero on that night in Istanbul was Jerzy Dudek and the Polish goalkeeper was another past Liverpool star who left Anfield to play at the Bernabeu.

2009 saw the La Liga giants make a double swoop as the Madrid-based outfit brought Alvaro Arbeloa and Xabi Alonso to the Bernabeu. The latter’s £30m move is probably the biggest out of all the transfers made between the two clubs due to the illustrious career the Spaniard has had.

Now, Alexander-Arnold looks set to join this list, and like the first two names mentioned, Liverpool fans will not be happy about the Scouser leaving their club for free this summer.

Jamie Carragher on how Liverpool fans will view Trent Alexander-Arnold

Robbie Fowler predicted Trent Alexander-Arnold would leave Liverpool recently, and the former Reds striker has a feeling Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk will do the same.

Unlike the 26-year-old, the Liverpool fans’ reaction should the duo depart Anfield would be a lot different to Alexander-Arnold, which Jamie Carragher has already stated on Sky Sports.

“It’s more than a football decision,” the Sky Sports pundit said back in January. “It’s about his legacy at Liverpool and how he is seen. Do you want to be seen like [Steven] Gerrard or [Steve] McManaman?

“He went to Real Madrid and won cups, but he is not adored. As a local player, Trent has been there for 20 years. I don’t think it would be nice to have a feeling of leaving on a free. I guarantee Liverpool supporters will feel that way.

“Things are expected of you as a local player. I think to leave Liverpool is difficult as a local player. I wanted to leave in the right way, so they remembered me in the right way. If he stays, he will be remembered as one of the best to play for the club and not far behind Gerrard.”
