Liverpool signed only one player for the upcoming season during a bit of a muddled transfer window.

The Reds had looked primed to bolster their squad following the arrival of Arne Slot ahead of the new season.

However, despite a perceived need to upgrade the Liverpool squad in both midfield and at centre-back, the Reds’ sole signing was a forward; Federico Chiesa.

The lack of concrete movement does not mean that work was not going on behind the scenes at Anfield, however.

Richard Hughes has been praised for the job he did at Liverpool during the off-season and one agent now involved in a potential deal with the Reds has publicly spoken out.

Cesar Huerta agent speaks out

Although plenty of Liverpool supporters will feel that the club could have done more this summer, it does not feel as though they were especially close to doing any big business.

Martin Zubimendi is the obvious one which got away from them, but after the Spaniard turned them down, Liverpool do not seem to have tried for anyone else. In midfield at least.

What they did reportedly do, is make a late attempt to sign Pumas forward Cesar Huerta.

A name perhaps unknown to a European audience, Huerta is a 23-year-old left winger who is yet to play outside of Mexico. A strange target to say the least.

Rather than look at him as a signing for this season, though, reports claim that Liverpool wanted to buy Huerta and send him to Sunderland on-loan. As the Black Cats refused their part in the deal, the move was off.

While this has yet to truly be reported in the English press, it has been big news in Mexico. And now Huerta’s agent, Gabriel Moraes, has been speaking to Jovenes Futbolistas MX about the failed transfer.

“The quality of the other options was not strong enough for Huerta to grow, to be a Liverpool player in 2025,” Moraes explains.

“That was the idea and Liverpool only wanted England and by law could not loan another Premier League player.

“Not all teams needed the position or could guarantee minutes during the 2024-2025 season,” he adds. “He [Huerta] deserved better but life is like that sometimes."

Will Liverpool come back in for Cesar Huerta?

This is a rather bizarre story, but it does seem as though Liverpool genuinely did want to sign Huerta before loaning him out for experience in England.

Unable to move him to the Premier League as per the competition’s rules, they sought a Championship deal but could not find a willing taker.

Given the late nature of the story – the news broke on the penultimate day of the window – it does beg the question of why Liverpool did not give themselves more time to find a team for Huerta to join.

In the days since, it has been claimed that Liverpool will continue to monitor Huerta until the January transfer window and perhaps they will keep looking for the right landing spot for him, too.

Of course, the other option is to sign the Mexico international and parachute him straight into Slot’s first-team squad. But, with respect to the Liga MX, that jump may just be too big. Let’s see how this one develops.
