After being quiet during the summer transfer window this year, Liverpool supporters already have one eye on 2025.

The Reds had been expected to do a little more than they did in their first window under Arne Slot.

There were not massive changes needed to the Liverpool squad, but a new midfielder and a long-term option at centre-back seemed like necessary pieces of business to do. In the end, Liverpool did neither.

No matter, the third position that appeared to be high on the Reds’ to-do list was to add a new, versatile forward player who could rotate across the front line.

Ultimately, that player ended up being Federico Chiesa. But for a long time it had looked like Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon had been the preferred candidate.

Liverpool even agreed a deal to sign Gordon, with medicals said to have been arranged. But the deal fell through when Newcastle got cold feet and the 23-year-old now looks set to extend his stay on Tyneside.

No Liverpool move for Anthony Gordon

It never felt as though Liverpool were seriously pushing to sign Gordon this summer. The opportunity with Newcastle came up as a result of the Magpies’ PSR issues.

With Gordon reportedly desperate to join Liverpool, you get the feeling that if the Reds had gone all in to get the former Everton man, then they would have.

Instead, it felt more likely that Liverpool were lining Gordon up for 2025, when the forward would have just one year left on his deal.

It had even been claimed that Gordon signing a new contract would not deter Liverpool, with a release clause likely to be included in the extension anyway.

However, according to journalist Graeme Bailey, there will be no such clause in Gordon’s deal, which will run until 2030. Speaking exclusively to Rousing The Kop, Bailey says that this now makes it extremely unlikely that Liverpool will move for Gordon in 2025.

“I think it means he’s not leaving next summer, but it totally depends on where Newcastle are on their journey,” says the reporter.

“If they miss out on Champions League this coming year, you don’t know what’s going to happen. But I think that will determine things more so.

“Many things can change, but obviously his short-term future is definitely at Newcastle,” Bailey adds. “I would see him staying until after the summer of 2025 now.”

Will Liverpool maintain their interest?

Although a move looks like it’s off the cards for now, Bailey insists that Liverpool’s interest in Gordon will not be completely ended, more simply postponed.

“I wouldn’t say the new contract would end Liverpool’s interest, but I think Newcastle’s performance will dictate things,” he says.

“There are suggestions that there may be an agreement of some type that if things don’t work out and a Champions League club comes in, then he’d be allowed to leave.”

Even in that event, it now seems likely that Gordon’s price-tag would be prohibitive to Liverpool.

Obviously, there was a deal to be done there and the player was very keen. But for whatever reason, the Reds haven’t pressed home that advantage. If things change perhaps Liverpool will be first in the queue, but for now this is one to put to the back of shelf.
