'I expect': Liverpool would now be willing to sell under-fire player if right offer came this month - journalist

A week into the January transfer window and much of the talk around Liverpool has been to do with potential outgoings.

The Reds are in a strong position in the Premier League despite a disappointing draw with Manchester United on Sunday.

But while most supporters would like to see their title push strengthened with some new additions to the Liverpool squad, there is so far nothing to suggest that will happen.

Instead, players such as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ben Doak have been linked with moves away from Anfield.

Another player who has been in the spotlight regarding a transfer has been Darwin Nunez.

And after Nunez hinted that he’s keen to join AC Milan with some suspect social media activity, journalist David Lynch has clarified Liverpool’s position on their misfiring number nine.

Liverpool would sell Darwin Nunez for right money

Nunez has had a poor season so far. The Uruguayan came off the bench on Sunday to pick up a silly booking to rule him out of their next Premier League game.

His fifth yellow card of the campaign means that Darwin now has more league cautions than goal contributions this term.

That poor return has fed into the notion that Nunez could be sold. And asked about potential interest from Milan in the 25-year-old, Lynch claimed that a £50-60m bid would see Liverpool ‘bite someone’s hands off.’

“On Darwin I saw suggestions that Liverpool would accept 50 to 60 million, I mean I’ve absolutely no doubt they would!” the reporter told Anfield Agenda.

“The big question is whether that sort of offer would ever come in. I don’t think Liverpool would ideally mess with the squad in January, I don’t think they want to do that, but it would take some turning down if an offer of that size came in in January, I think they would bite someone’s hand off for that.

“For me he’s very much a candidate to go in the summer,” Lynch adds.

“I expect that will happen given his role, his seeming unhappiness at that because he’ll want to play more and the fact there could be a market for him.

“I do think there’ll be a market for him but I don’t think it’ll be in the 50 to 60 million mark.”

Nunez unlikely to go in January

It will be fascinating to see if an offer does arrive for Nunez over the course of this month.

As Lynch points out, it is unlikely that Milan would be able to offer anything close to the £50m being talked about even if they wanted to.

However, that does not mean that the Italian club – or someone else – will not make Liverpool a proposal this winter.

If the bid is a paltry kind of amount, or a loan, it’s hard to see why the Reds would feel the need to let Nunez go mid-season.

Although he has been disappointing, the former Benfica man can still be valuable for Liverpool as they battle on four fronts. Come the summer, and things will surely be a different story, though.
