Liverpool put in a much improved performance against Tottenham on Sunday to head into the break with a 3-1 lead.

The Reds were coming off the back off successive Premier League draws, but were boosted by Chelsea only managing a draw against Everton earlier in the day.

That result at Goodison Park meant that Liverpool knew they would top the Premier League table on Christmas Day this year.

And they were also well aware that a win would put them four points clear of the Blues while also having a game in hand.

Tottenham is never an easy place to go, though, with Ange Postecoglou’s side having scored nine goals in their past two games.

But Liverpool handled them well during the first-half. James Maddison did break through with a goal, but not much else got past them besides. And according to former Reds centre-back Jamie Carragher, there was one player especially who deserved credit for that.

Jamie Carragher praises Joe Gomez display

Liverpool supporters would have been forgiven for turning up at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium feeling a little apprehensive on Sunday.

But after a first 45 minutes in which they really asserted their dominance, that worry largely disappeared.

The Reds were sublime in all departments. Solid at the back, dangerous going forwards and Trent Alexander-Arnold even had time for a Steven Gerrard impression.

But while Gary Neville was comparing Trent to Gerrard, Carragher was busy praising Joe Gomez in the Liverpool defence.

“Liverpool have defended really well,” Carragher told Sky Sports at half-time.

“I think Joe Gomez has been outstanding.”

Gomez shows Liverpool are in safe hands

Liverpool are still waiting for a clear update on when Ibrahima Konate will be back in action.

Konate posted an update during the week, but it is still not quite exact when the Frenchman will be playing again.

Nevertheless, Liverpool have coped without their first choice centre-back partner for Virgil van Dijk so far, and Gomez showed once again that he can be the answer whenever Ibou is out.

That the 27-year-old is turning up so consistently once again is a real credit to him after a summer in which his future was in question.

The heroes may have mainly been in attack for Liverpool on Sunday, but there were still a few at the back regardless.
