Despite going through a period of some change, Liverpool still have players of reference all over the pitch.

During Jurgen Klopp’s time at the club, the Reds once again become one of Europe’s very best teams.

As a by-product of that, Liverpool players began being recognised as some of the top talents on the planet.

Back in 2019, it should be remembered that there were seven Ballon d’Or nominees within the Liverpool squad.

One of them, Virgil van Dijk, should really have won the award, losing out to Lionel Messi by just a handful of votes.

For many, though, seven should really have been eight that year. Somehow, left-back Andy Robertson was overlooked for a nomination. Five years on, and Robertson is finally getting his flowers.

Andy Robertson hailed as ‘best left-back in the world’

Robertson has often been an underrated figure at Anfield. Combative, hard-working and about as down to earth as they come, it’s not hard to see why the 30-year-old does not get his due.

In a team that has often been packed full of stars, Robertson has been outshone by the likes of Van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, Alisson Becker and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Nevertheless, the Scotland captain has been no less important to Liverpool’s return to the top and is without doubt a bona fide Liverpool legend.

Happily, it seems that Robertson’s consistency since arriving at the club in 2017 has not gone unnoticed by his fellow professionals.

Speaking to El Correo de Andalucia, Real Betis left-back Romain Perraud has named Liverpool’s No.26 as being the best on the planet in his position.

“For the last four or five years, I think the best left-back in the world is Liverpool’s Robertson,” says the former Southampton defender.

“When I have time, it’s important for me to see his ability to play in this position. It’s a very, very good example.

Andy Robertson is not finished yet

With all the talk over the contracts of Van Dijk, Salah and Alexander-Arnold, it has been a little under reported that Robertson’s deal will also end in 2026.

Obviously, this makes it not as pressing as the trio who are out of contract a year earlier. But it does mean that Liverpool will soon have a decision to make.

There was talk over the summer that Liverpool want to sign Rayan Ait Nouri from Wolves and the 23-year-old would look like a natural replacement for Robertson.

But while the Reds undoubtedly need to think about a succession plan, their current left-back has been showing this season that he still has plenty left in the tank.

A series of uncharacteristic injuries may have hit Robertson over the past year, but at 30 he should not yet be written off. Perraud’s assertion should help to refocus minds that Liverpool have had a truly special player in Robbo and he isn’t done yet.
