Liverpool are coming into a crucial period in terms of contract renewals at the club.

Things have been going really well for the Reds ever since Arne Slot joined this summer. One poor result against Nottingham Forest aside, it has been perfect.

Unfortunately, the good performances have not led to any movement in regards to the futures of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

Alexander-Arnold surprised reporters after Saturday’s win over Bournemouth by speaking openly about his own future.

Although Trent sounded happy and keen to stay at Anfield, there were also no definitive statements that he will continue with his boyhood club next season.

Understandably, Alexander-Arnold’s comments have caused a big reaction. And former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy is the latest to give his take.

Danny Murphy makes Trent Alexander-Arnold prediction

Alexander-Arnold has been in as good a form as ever so far this season. The 25-year-old even registered his 100th goal contribution for the club with an assist against Bournemouth.

His quality has only underlined why Real Madrid are interested in signing Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer if he can’t agree terms with Liverpool.

For many supporters, Madrid’s interest has only served to reinforce what a special talent the Liverpool academy graduate is.

Although some fans would argue differently, the Spanish giants are probably the biggest club on the planet.

The presence of stars such as Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Alexander-Arnold’s best mate Jude Bellingham is testament to that.

And speaking to TalkSPORT, Murphy has claimed that given the stature of the club, many Liverpool fans would understand if Trent wanted to join Madrid and would wish him well if that’s what ended up happening.

“I think even if he did go to Madrid a lot of Liverpool fans would understand and go ‘well done, you’ve been amazing for us and I understand it,'” says the pundit.

“I wouldn’t criticise him by the way. All I’m saying is. his wording in that interview suggests to me that he’s maybe open to the idea of going somewhere else. That is a concern because he’s so brilliant.”

Liverpool should not accept Alexander-Arnold defeat

It would be foolish of Liverpool supporters to argue against the obvious attraction Alexander-Arnold would have towards playing for Real Madrid.

Obviously, we all like to think our club is the biggest on the planet, and Liverpool is certainly in that arena.

But Madrid are just a level above. In terms of trophies won, in terms of pull for the biggest players around and in terms of financial might, Los Blancos are pretty much unbeatable.

Having won everything there is to win with Liverpool, most can surely understand why the prospect of joining Real alongside Bellingham would appeal to Trent.

Nevertheless, that does not mean that Liverpool – the club or the supporters – should merely sit back and accept that happening. If Trent does give up on his local club and head to Spain, there will plenty who understand but there will be more who would not want to see him back again. This hangs in the balance.
