Liverpool are gearing up for another date in the UEFA Champions League as they face Bologna at Anfield.

The Reds are looking for their second win out of two games in the competition so far and are favourites to beat the Italian side.

It won’t be a straightforward game, with Bologna boasting a number of interesting players.

But if Liverpool play anything like their best, then the Reds should hand Arne Slot an extension to his perfect start in the tournament.

With an away game at Crystal Palace to come at the weekend, Slot looks set to rotate his Liverpool squad a little for the Italian’s visit.

And as the Liverpool head coach shuffles his deck, it looks like one young player is set to feature on Wednesday.

Liverpool drop Trey Nyoni hint

It isn’t only the Liverpool first-team who are taking on Bologna on Wednesday.

Just as they did against AC Milan during matchday one, the Liverpool academy will mirror the senior side and face their Italian opponents in the UEFA Youth League.

That game is set to get underway at 2pm and with the team news already in, there has been a glaring omission from coach Barry Lewtas.

Despite having captained the team for their 0-0 draw in Milan, midfielder Trey Nyoni has been left out of the 18-man squad to play Bologna at Kirkby.

While that is disappointing news for the U18s, it could certainly mean that Nyoni is in-line for a senior call-up instead.

Of course, this could also be injury related. But given that the 17-year-old was spotted at the AXA Training Centre with the first-team on Tuesday, that seems unlikely.

Nyoni caught Slot’s eye during pre-season and it looks the former Leicester City talent is set to be on the Liverpool bench for the first time under the Dutchman.

Trey Nyoni ready for first-team test

Obviously, unless something strange happens, Nyoni’s first-team experience is unlikely to come with a start at Anfield on Wednesday.

However, the teenager could be looking at some minutes from the bench if things go well for Liverpool.

It had looked as though Nyoni would be involved against West Ham last week, but Slot decided to put Tyler Morton in the squad instead.

There is a chance that the same thing happens again here, with Nyoni simply not being risked for the academy in case he’s needed for the seniors.

But it feels like this time the young man is about to get his first taste of a Champions League night at Anfield. Liverpool fans deemed Nyoni to be ‘special‘ based on his performances in pre-season. This is a different ball game, but on the back of that, he looks ready for it.
