Liverpool look in need of reinforcements this January after a leggy defeat against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.

The Reds do not seem especially likely to make any moves over the winter window, but Arne Slot’s squad are starting to look like they could do with some reinforcements.

As a result, chatter is continuing over who Liverpool could look to add before now and the transfer deadline.

Since his arrival at the club last summer, sporting director Richard Hughes has maintained that Liverpool will be ‘opportunistic’ in the market.

One way of doing that is to take advantage of players who’s contracts are ending and bring them to Anfield for undervalue.

Bayern Munich are a club to keep an eye on in that respect. The German giants could yet lose Alphonso Davies, Joshua Kimmich and Thomas Muller for nothing next summer. And according to journalist Christian Falk, Kimmich is still of interest to the Reds.

Liverpool weighing up Joshua Kimmich move

Slot’s reluctance to use any midfielders outside of the Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, Curtis Jones, Dominik Szoboszlai quartet is starting to be a worry.

Mac Allister and Gravenberch in particular are playing too much and could easily burn out by the time the Spring rolls around.

As a result, a new midfield signing in January would still feel like a good idea.

Although he is currently set to be on the market as a free agent in the summer, perhaps a cheeky move for Kimmich ahead of time would be the right course of action for Liverpool.

Taking to X on Wednesday afternoon, Falk certainly suggested that the 29-year-old is still very much being looked at.

“FC Liverpool are considering signing of Joshua Kimmich,” he reports. “Kimmich is a free Agent in Summer. Bayern is in Talks with Kimmich for a new contract.”

Joshua Kimmich doesn’t make sense for Liverpool

First things first, Kimmich is clearly a superb player. Jose Mourinho once called Kimmich ‘absolutely phenomenal‘ and the Germany international is as experienced as they come.

Kimmich has been described as a ‘quarterback‘ type midfielder, too, someone who sits deep and launches attacks.

That is the kind of midfielder Slot appears to want to add to his Liverpool squad.

However, Davies looks set to agree a new contract at Bayern and we think Kimmich will simply do the same. As he’d arrive on big wages and turns 30 in February, this just isn’t a signing that makes sense for Liverpool.
