Real Madrid have been advised to sign a second Liverpool player as they look to bring England star Trent Alexander-Arnold to the Bernabeu.

Alexander-Arnold is expected to move to the Spanish capital in the summer after emerging as a key transfer target for La Liga giants Madrid.

The 26-year-old has spent his entire career at Anfield, making over 300 appearances for his boyhood club and helping them win both the Premier League and Champions League.

But Alexander-Arnold will be out of contract come the end of the season and talks over a new deal to stay at Liverpool have stalled.

Real Madrid are preparing a huge deal for the England international and even tried to secure his services at the start of the January transfer window, submitting a speculative bid which was quickly rejected by Liverpool.

While Madrid continue to pursue Alexander-Arnold, they have been told it would make ‘perfect sense’ to also sign Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.

Like Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk will also be a free agent at the end of the season and Tony Cascarino says a move to Real Madrid is a ‘no-brainer’.

‘It would make perfect sense for Real Madrid to sign Virgil van Dijk as well as Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool when their contracts expire this summer,’ the former striker told The Times.

‘Real need a high-class centre back and Van Dijk is one of the top five in the world. Carlo Ancelotti likes to work with experienced players and at 33, Van Dijk can play at the highest level for maybe another four years.

‘In recent times, Real's transfer policy has shifted to successfully target free agents, including Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba and Kylian Mbappe. It seems like a no-brainer.

‘I have watched Real a number of times this season and it is clear they need a top centre back alongside Rudiger.

‘They could match the wages offered by Liverpool and offer him a new challenge at the greatest club in the world. Their history is second to none.

‘Teams wanting to challenge for trophies need experience, which is why Van Dijk would be an attractive option for Real.’

Van Dijk, who completed a £75m move from Southampton in 2018, will make his 300th appearance for Liverpool this weekend.

Liverpool boast a best defensive record in the Premier League this season, conceding just 20 goals in 21 games as they chase a 20th league title.

Arne Slot’s side continued their sensational Champions League record on Tuesday night with a 2-1 win over Lille.

League leaders Liverpool return to Premier League action on Saturday against relegation-battlers Ipswich Town, who were thrashed 6-0 by Manchester City last time out.
