Report: Liverpool keen on 'brave' defender who has already sent public Virgil van Dijk message
Today at 12:00 PM
Liverpool refrained from splashing the cash in the summer transfer window as Arne Slot opted to stick to his guns after replacing Jurgen Klopp at the helm.
Federico Chiesa joined the club and an agreement in principle was reached to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, but apart from that, the Reds just focussed on moving players on to recoup funds.
However, the upcoming transfer windows are set to be different as they have a handful of issues to address.
And if reports are to be believed, they are keeping tabs on a versatile Ajax defender who has a lot of experience despite being just 21.
Liverpool keen on signing Devyne Rensch from Ajax
With Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contracts running out at the end of the current season, the Reds are in a spot of bother.
Mohamed Salah also finds himself in the same boat, so Liverpool could well face an uphill task of replacing three of their most important players next summer.
The Egyptian’s situation is a topic for another day, but it appears as if the Reds have identified a player who can play centre-back and right-back – which would mitigate the potential departures of Van Dijk and Trent.
According to Caught Offside, Liverpool are keen on Devyne Rensch and have scouted his performances for Ajax in recent games.
The 21-year-old is a full Dutch international and has played 147 games for Ajax since making his debut under Erik ten Hag in 2020.
The report states that Tottenham are also in the running for the defender, who has held talks with Ajax about signing a new contract.
Back in 2021, Rensch said he watched a lot of videos of Van Dijk, who he rated about Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt.
What has Devyne Rensch said about his style of play?
Rensch’s versatility has allowed him to play multiple positions at the back for Ajax over the years.
He named Daley Blind as a player he has learned a lot from, having played together with him for the Eredivisie giants.
Speaking about his style of play, Rensch said to Ajax TV (via GOAL): "I'm a brave player. I dribble a lot and go past my opponent. Defensively, I have good positional awareness.
“I try to learn from Daley Blind. He is on another level with his thoughts. He's so bright. I can learn from that. He's so calm and great when passing. I admire that and try to reach that level too."
