Fernando Torres holds a special place in the hearts of most Liverpool fans, with the former Spain international since retiring delving into the world of coaching.

With Torres even working with Liverpool’s academy under Jurgen Klopp earlier this year, the 40-year-old coach has spent his entire career on the touchline with boyhood club Atletico Madrid, where this season the former striker became manager of the B team.

Tipped to succeed Diego Simeone at Atletico, there’s a lot of excitement surrounding Torres‘ potential as a manager, with former Liverpool teammate Xabi Alonso already making a big name for himself since being appointed Bayer Leverkusen head coach in 2022.

And Torres could now be about to land his first senior job in management.

Torres in contention to become Schalke 04 manager

According to Bild, Torres is in the running to become the new manager of German giants Schalke 04, who after being rejected by Real Madrid legend Raul could now turn to the former Liverpool talisman for the role.

As per the report, though, there is no evidence yet to suggest that Torres wants to take over the 2. Bundesliga side, who in recent years have been viewed as something of a basket case after their dramatic fall from grace.

Moreover, with Torres only stepping into professional management this season with Atletico Madrid’s B team in the third-tier of Spanish football, the leap to a club as big as Schalke could be daunting for the 40-year-old.

However, given how highly-rated Torres is and former Liverpool stars like Alonso showing that they are the next generation of managers, the Atletico coach could be tempted with the prospect of taking on a big job like Schalke, who could do with some new ideas.

Torres should take the leap and become Schalke’s new manager

Every manager has to start somewhere, and for Torres, a move to Gelsenkirchen to take on a job at one of the biggest clubs in Germany could be where the former Liverpool star’s coaching journey really begins.

With Alonso finding immense success at Leverkusen and Steven Gerrard thriving with his first job in management with Rangers, Torres could become the next graduate from the Liverpool school of coaching if he takes the Schalke job.

And despite the size of the task at hand, Torres knows he has what it takes to be success with the second-tier German side, where the Spanish coach could be a success if things go right for the Liverpool icon.
