Liverpool’s youngsters faced another big test on Wednesday as they came up against Blackpool in the EFL Trophy.

The Reds were playing their third and final group stage game at Bloomfield Road.

Having been thumped by Crewe on matchday one, Liverpool picked themselves up to draw with Harrogate Town in September.

Up against second-place Blackpool, the young Reds knew that they’d have to beat the Seasiders to progress to the next round.

The Liverpool academy boys gave a good account of themselves, drawing 0-0 with Blackpool before winning the subsequent ‘bonus point’ penalty shootout 8-7.

It was not enough to ultimately squeeze the Reds through, but having kept a clean sheet and performed some heroics in the shootout, it was a special night for goalkeeper Harvey Davies.

Harvey Davies shines for Liverpool

Davies enjoyed a good loan spell at Crewe last year, where he made 27 appearances in League Two.

Although another loan might have been a better way for the 21-year-old to spend the first-half of this season, he is clearly developing well.

Neil Mellor called Davies ‘outstanding‘ back in 2021, suggesting that the shot-stopper could be a future Liverpool goalkeeper.

As Reds supporters have seen already this season, Davies has some competition in that regard, with Alisson Becker, Caoimhin Kelleher, Vitezslav Jaros and soon Giorgi Mamardashvili to contend with.

Davies does appear to be the current fourth choice in the Liverpool squad, though. He has been on the bench three times for the senior side this season, most recently during Tuesday’s win over Bayer Leverkusen.

And according to the Liverpool ECHO, his performance during Wednesday’s clash with Blackpool was befitting of a young player on the fringes of the first-team.

They claim that Davies was ‘the most impressive’ Liverpool player on display at Bloomfield Road and cite his two saves in the penalty shootout as evidence of this. With the EFL Trophy now over, a loan move could reportedly be sought for Davies in January for him to get more senior game time.

Who else played for Liverpool?

Davies was not the only squad member from Liverpool’s win on Tuesday to be involved a day later in Blackpool.

Another who Arne Slot did not bring off the bench, Tyler Morton, played for the U21s on Wednesday.

And according to the ECHO, Morton was another who eventually stood out.

Although he is said to have struggled a touch during the initial phases of the game, the 22-year-old subsequently found his feet and showed his quality.

A special mention is also given for 35-year-old Jay Spearing who filled in at centre-back on the night.
