Jurgen Klopp’s career in football has become legendary.

The German coach spent time at Mainz 05 and Borussia Dortmund in his home nation before making the career-defining move to Liverpool in 2015.

At Anfield, Klopp promised Liverpool fans success from the beginning and would become a club legend as the 57-year-old delivered on it by winning every trophy for Reds fans and was the man who ended their 30-year wait for a Premier League title.

Throughout his time in England, Klopp could be a fiery character and often had run-ins with referees and TV broadcasters.

His Liverpool team often played like this, with his style of football often described as ‘heavy metal football’, a slogan that was born from an interview the German did in 2014.

The interview that gave birth to Jurgen Klopp’s ‘heavy metal’ slogan

In 2014, Borussia Dortmund were drawn in the same group as Arsenal in the Champions League and ahead of the first game at Signal Iduna Park, Klopp sat down with Sky Sports to talk about the contest.

When asked if he shares a similar philosophy of football with Arsene Wenger, Klopp disagreed and used music to describe the differences.

“I think he (Wenger) likes having the ball, playing football or passes, and it’s like an orchestra. It’s a silent song, I think,” Klopp stated.

“I like heavy metal more. I know it’s not the most important statistic, but I love it when I read after the game that we run more than the opponent.

“I like this. If somebody tells me after a game, ‘you ran 11 kilometers more than the other team’, that’s good.”

Klopp would outperform Wenger in the match that followed, with Dortmund beating Arsenal 2-0 courtesy of goals from Ciro Immobile and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – who would later join the Gunners.

This style of football brought Klopp great success at Liverpool and it earned him a place among the greatest managers to ever coach in the Premier League.

How Jurgen Klopp compares to Arsene Wenger

Harvey Elliott has called for a statue of Klopp to be built at Anfield after all that the German achieved at Liverpool having won every trophy while manager of the Reds.

Across the 334 Premier League matches he oversaw at Liverpool, Klopp’s heavy metal football brought him 209 wins, 78 draws and 48 losses on the way to winning the Premier League once in 2020.

The former Borussia Dortmund boss also picked up 10 Manager of the Month awards and two Manager of the Seasons following the 2019/20 and 2021/22 campaigns.

As for Wenger, the former Arsenal boss coached an incredible 828 games for the North London club in the Premier League, with his more organised style of football bringing him wins in 476 games of them, along with 199 draws and 153 losses.

The French coach would win the English top flight with Arsenal three times, bagging 15 Manager of the Month awards along the way, in addition to the Manager of the Season award three times.

Both coaches may have different styles of play, but it got them to the same place, as both became Premier League legends.
