Liverpool suffered only their second loss of the season last night as the Reds were convincingly beaten 1-0 by Tottenham in the League Cup.

The Merseyside giants trail in their semi-final series against the north London side after Lucas Bergvall’s late winner secured a crucial lead for Tottenham against Liverpool, with Arne Slot’s men having it all to play for at Anfield next month.

With attention already focused on this weekend’s FA Cup tie against Accrington Stanley, Liverpool will want to bounce back from what has been a disappointing few games after Sunday’s draw with Manchester United in the Premier League.

Yet Slot was today forced to cancel Liverpool’s training session after last night’s loss.

Liverpool squad arrived late after travel disruption back home

According to Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas, Liverpool saw their travel back to Merseyside disrupted after weather conditions forced their flight to land at Birmingham, forcing Slot to call off today’s training session.

Thomas posted: “Understand Liverpool have had to cancel training today because of late arrival back from Tottenham. Rapidly deteriorating weather caused by freezing fog caused their flight to be diverted to Birmingham, before making onward journey on the ground.”

Indeed, the weather has been against Liverpool for seemingly the entire season after the Reds saw their final Merseyside Derby against Everton postponed last month due to Storm Darragh, with Sunday’s game against United also under threat from snow.

And heading into Saturday’s tie with League Two side Accrington Stanley, the Reds could be lacking that extra sharpness that comes with missing a training session, even against a side sat 19th in the English fourth-tier.

Slot will be smart to rotate heavily in big FA Cup clash

Liverpool head into Saturday’s FA Cup clash as heavy favourites, with the Reds one of the leading sides to go all the way in the oldest cup competition in football given how impressive Slot has been as manager of the Reds.

Yet the Dutch manager knows he will have to rotate heavily if he’s to keep his squad as fit and as healthy as possible with so many games taking place this month, with Federico Chiesa already set to start for Liverpool against Accrington Stanley.

Saturday will present Liverpool with an excellent opportunity to give minutes to players who are looking to impress Slot, and for the likes of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Alexis Mac Allister, it will be a game where the key figures will finally get to rest ahead of next week’s tie against Nottingham Forest.
