Liverpool’s new year has gotten off to an intense start as they battle Real Madrid in the transfer market.

The Reds have often come out of clashes with the Spanish giants worse for wear over recent times.

And Liverpool supporters will be growing weary that another locking of horns between the Reds and the Whites is going to end with the European champions as the victors.

This time, the fight is not on the pitch, but off it. Real are pushing to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold during the January transfer market.

So far, all the signs suggest that Alexander-Arnold does not want to leave mid-season and that Liverpool will manage to stand firm in the face of mounting pressure.

But whether Trent leaves this month or during the summer, it’s starting to look likely that he’ll end up in Madrid at some point in 2025. According to journalist Melissa Reddy, however, Liverpool have not given up hope of keeping the 26-year-old at Anfield.

Liverpool not giving up Trent Alexander-Arnold hope

The longer Alexander-Arnold retains his silence over his future, the more it would seem like that future will be spent away from Liverpool.

After seeing an initial approach knocked back by the Reds, reports suggest that Real Madrid are set to make an official offer, which seems likely to be around £20m.

With perhaps the biggest club in the world trying to so hard to get Trent, Liverpool fans may be starting to feel resigned.

But speaking to Sky Sports on Wednesday, Reddy says that the Reds will continue trying to keep Alexander-Arnold right up until he tells them he wants to leave.

“Liverpool were never, ever going to countenance his exit this month,” Reddy reports. “That was a no-go and they made that very clear to Real given their league and Champions league ambitions.

“They also haven’t given up hope of keeping Trent and signing him to a new contract and I think until he comes out and says ‘I want to leave for Madrid’ they won’t give up hope, why should they? And so far that hasn’t been said.”

Liverpool not giving up on Trent just yet

Until Alexander-Arnold states his position either way, it seems that anything could still happen in this saga.

Having said that, it seems very unlikely that Real Madrid would send a bid over to Liverpool without the player’s approval.

Jamie Carragher thinks Alexander-Arnold is playing games with the Reds, suggesting that the bid from Spain is merely a ploy to save face once he departs on a free transfer. But it seems as though things are not quite as certain as that.

If Liverpool knew Trent was going, they probably still would not accept a January bid for his services.

But that they are ready to dig in so defiantly suggests that they still hold out hope that the boyhood Red will continue his journey with his hometown team. Hope is not lost.
